Eldoret Baby Centre
POP has pledged $30,000 towards a baby centre in Eldoret Kenya. POP is working in partnership with Discover the World on this project, a U.S. based charity with a strong presence in Kenya and with various HIV/AIDS orphanages in Nairobi, including the Shepherd’s Orphanage. The total cost of the project is $50,000.
Recently, there has been a large increase in the number of abandoned babies in Eldoret Town. They are found abandoned in hospitals, hotels, and even by the road side. Many are born HIV-positive or face health challenges from exposure to the cold or unfavourable conditions in which they were found.
Usually, all un-cared for cases of abandoned babies are handled by the Moi referral hospital which is a public institution that has the capacity to keep them only for a maximum of three months. And now, in Eldoret Police Station, there are 24 abandoned babies being kept without a home, shelter or provisions.
POP has pledged these funds to create a Baby Reception Centre for these 24 babies. They will be sheltered, have access to clean equipment and health care, and have staff who will care for them until they are able to be adopted or moved to other orphanages for bigger kids. Giving them a first shot at a supported life as a baby will help to secure their future.
The funds will also buy: baby cots, clothing, consumables (soap, diapers, electricity, water), transportation, meals, medical care and personnel fees.
